Signs You’re Doing Well as a Manager

How do you know if you’re doing something right? It can be difficult to tell, especially since management positions often keep you busy and on the move. Being in charge of people can be stressful and bring a lot of pressure into your life, sometimes to the point that you start being a bad boss without even noticing. There are ways to tell that you’re being a good manager, though, rather than a bad one, and you’ll want to aim for these if you want to keep your business afloat and your team happy. Here are some signs that you’re doing things right.

You don’t have favorites.

When you’re a manager, you can’t play favorites with your team. Sure, there will be some people who catch your eye more than others, but this person can’t be someone that gets all of your attention. Letting this happen is a surefire way of ruining the rest of your team’s morale, and they’ll likely end up giving work with lesser quality because of it. It wouldn’t be a conscious decision—seeing that someone is obviously the favorite can make them give up on trying to impress you. Playing favorites will only ruin the work your team does.

You treat your employees right.

Employees are people first and workers second. Some managers don’t seem to understand that and instead treat their employees like machine parts rather than people with thoughts and feelings. Hurling abuse toward your employees isn’t motivational; in fact, it’ll do the opposite. To be a good manager, you need to treat your team like humans, and if you do that already places you above many other managers out there.

You hold everyone accountable, including yourself.

Mistakes happen to everyone, but you can’t let that slide—including for yourself. Holding a person accountable for their actions affects office morale and team integrity, which can make or break the culture you’ve built in your workplace. If you make a mistake, you should own up to it just as much as you’d hold an employee accountable because you’re not infallible. Owning up to your mistakes rather than writing them off will set an example for the rest of your team.

You are open and transparent.

No one should feel like you’re hiding something from the team. A transparent manager contributes to a happy working environment. You should also be open with your employees: give them feedback and be open to feedback in return. This will help your employees know where they can improve and show you where you can improve. Communication is vital to a successful team and always works both ways.

How to Be a Leader Regardless of Your Title

Matthew Schenk business header 10

You might aspire to become a great leader, but your current title isn’t representative of that. Being an entry-level employee doesn’t mean that you can’t be a leader. You can become a strong leader that helps others out no matter what your current job title is. Take a look at the information below so that you can learn how to be a leader no matter what your current situation looks like.

Develop the Right Mindset

A big part of becoming a leader is developing the right mindset. You need to think about things in the right terms to become a true leader. Learn to look at things positively and see challenges as an opportunity instead of thinking that they’re burdens. This will allow you to become a leader and you just might work your way into a leadership title if you keep at it.

Support Others

Supporting others is something that you should try to do even if you’re in an entry-level position. If you can be a source of support for your fellow workers, then you will be able to naturally step up to become a leader. Be a person that others can rely on and always try to put in the work. If you can support your team while maintaining a positive attitude, then this is going to pay off eventually.

Learn to Be Flexible

Being flexible is also something that you should strive for. You can’t approach things from a rigid standpoint if you want to be a successful leader. True leaders are flexible enough to be able to adapt to various challenges. A person who is useful in many different ways is going to be more appealing as a leader than one who only stays in one lane.

Try to Be Creative

Leaders are also people who can think about situations in different ways than others. Work on developing your creativity and then try to think outside the box to solve problems. If you’re able to use creative thinking to make situations at work easier, then this ability will be recognized. Let your creativity lead you toward leadership success.

What School Principals and Entrepreneurs Have in Common

Matthew Schenk business header 25

On the surface, you might not think that being a school principal has much at all in common with being an entrepreneur. There are actually many things that these two career paths have in common, though. Read on to explore the commonalities between school principals and entrepreneurs. It’ll give you greater insight into how certain skills and approaches transfer over.

They Both Have a Vision

Both entrepreneurs and principals have a vision for what they want to achieve. The vision for a school and the type of success that a principal wants to achieve isn’t too different from entrepreneurial visions. You need to be able to lay out goals that you can work toward. Both paths involve coming up with a roadmap to get to where you want to go as well.

They Both Have to Take Risks

There are going to be risks involved when you’re operating as an entrepreneur and the same thing can be said for principals. Nothing is ever absolutely certain and you need to be able to analyze data to make the best decisions that you can. Sometimes it will be necessary to take a calculated risk if you believe it will be in the best interests of your students. Both entrepreneurs and school principals have to think carefully when making decisions.

They Both Have to Adapt

Another thing that brings school principals and entrepreneurs together is the need to adapt to various situations. Things can change quickly and you won’t always have the luxury of waiting to make an important decision. It’s important to be flexible and to be able to think on your feet. Whether you’re a school principal or an entrepreneur, it’s going to be imperative to be able to adapt to various situations.

They Both Have to Support Staff

Finally, you should know that both principals and entrepreneurs need to do their best to support staff members. You need to make sure that you’re communicating with staff members and that you’re providing them with the necessary resources. These communication skills are going to be basically the same whether you’re a principal or an entrepreneur. Working to develop solid communication skills really will matter and you’ll also want to be able to make good decisions that will keep things moving in the right direction.

How Education Leaders Can Support Teachers

Matthew Schenk business header 27

It’s important for education leaders to do everything that they can to support teachers. Teachers have a very important job and they’re doing their best to teach the next generation. Keep reading to learn about ways that education leaders can support teachers. These supportive actions can really make a big difference that will make the education process go smoothly.

Providing Teachers with Technology and Resources

The first thing that education leaders should be doing is providing teachers with technology and resources. If teachers have access to better technology, then they will be able to provide kids with more thorough educational experiences. This could include providing things such as laptop computers and subscriptions to certain pieces of software. All teachers should have access to some technology to help their students meet educational goals.

Provide a Good Work Culture

Providing a good work culture is another way to support teachers in their endeavors. Teachers need to be able to have a good work culture where they feel like they can thrive. If the work culture is oppressive, then teachers will not be able to give it their all to educate students. Think about ways that you can improve the overall work conditions for teachers.

Give Them Opportunities to Learn

Giving your teachers opportunities to learn and get better will help. Education continues to evolve and new teaching methods are becoming available. Make sure that your teachers feel like they can continue to develop as educators and try to provide them with the resources to do so. It can lead to better outcomes for everyone involved and you will be able to know that you’re doing all that you can.

Open up Communication Channels

Some schools don’t do a good job of opening up communication channels so that teachers can have their voices heard. Listen to your teachers and take the time to come up with solutions to problems together. If teachers feel that their problems are being understood, then it’s going to be easier to work together to make things better. The first step is facilitating proper communication between teachers and administrative staff.

Tips for Hiring Passionate Employees

Matthew Schenk business header 23

You should always want to find employees who are going to benefit your company. If you’re looking to hire new employees soon, then it could be worthwhile to ensure that you get passionate employees. How do you go about hiring passionate employees? Read on to look at several tips that will make finding the employees that you want simpler.

Make Use of Essay Questions

Most job applications are very straightforward and they offer simple questions that require basic answers. These are fine, but you might want to have more nuanced questions to attract employees that are actually passionate. Essay questions in the job application process will allow you to identify job candidates who are particularly passionate about the field. You can seek out people with interesting answers or ones who seem to match your vision for the company.

Office Tours

Another good idea is to take your job candidates on a tour through your office. This can give job candidates a greater idea of what to expect at your company. It also allows you to gauge whether job candidates are truly passionate about the job. You should offer office tours to job candidates who have done well in the interview process and who you might be interested in hiring.

The “Absolutely” or “Absolutely Not” Rule

You can also implement a simple “absolutely” or “absolutely not” rule on hiring people. If you are so positive about a candidate that you feel hiring them is a no-brainer, then that works out great. If someone is an absolute no from everyone on the hiring team, then you know that they aren’t a good fit. Anyone who falls into the maybe category is someone who must not be that passionate about the job or who must not be quite everything that you’re looking for.

Look for People Who Ask Questions and Remain Engaged

Finally, it’s going to be prudent to look for job candidates who ask a lot of questions while remaining engaged in the process. If someone is interested in what you have to say and seems to really want to work for you, then that is a sign of passion. You’re more likely to find a good employee who will be passionate about the company if you’re looking out for stuff like this. Be mindful of what the job candidate is asking and look for these signs of passion.

Increasing Your Perception

Increasing your perception is likely the most obvious benefit of learning a second language. There are many situations where knowing a second language will come in handy. Many companies have business relationships with other companies from different countries. Knowing the language of those countries will improve your perception and allow you to communicate with them effectively.

You could raise your stock in a company by taking the time to learn these languages. Consider your options and know that showing this level of dedication can lead to various rewards within an organization.

Gaining a Larger Personal Network

Matthew Schenk business header 3

As a leader, you want to do your best to meet the needs of everyone that you’re leading. Becoming a better leader is not about benefiting yourself at all. Your increase in leadership capabilities will benefit others and it’ll help you to do your job more effectively. Take a look at the following ways that your growth as a leader will help others.

Teaching Others

Teaching others is going to be one of your responsibilities as a leader. If you can improve as a leader, then you’ll have an easier time imparting wisdom onto new employees. You can teach them to be more effective at their jobs and this will allow the entire company to run more efficiently. You should always strive to be a better teacher and to learn how to make others better at their jobs.

Communicating More Effectively

Communication is a great thing and it’s a huge part of being an effective leader. The best leaders know how to communicate with their teams to keep things operating smoothly. If you improve your communication skills, then the entire team is going to benefit from this. Work on your communication skills and try to determine how to become an efficient communicator.

Being Ready to Take Action

As you gain experience, you’re going to be more ready to take action. Sometimes you won’t have the luxury of being able to sit back and think about a problem. You might need to react to a situation fast while making the best decision that you can. Having a leader who can take charge of a situation even under pressing circumstances will benefit everyone involved.

Learning How to Make Use of Employees

Learning how to make use of employees and the skills that they possess is important, too. You see, as leaders get better at what they do, they become more capable of making use of their teams. It might be easier to learn how to delegate tasks effectively while understanding who is going to be the best candidate to handle certain things. How to Create a Strong Culture in Your School (or Business)

It’s important to ensure that you create a strong culture in your school. To do this, it’s going to be necessary to make certain changes and to seriously look at the decisions that you are making. Take the time to read the information below to learn how you can create the strong culture that your school (or business) needs. It should help you to make positive changes so that you can move forward with confidence.

Hire the Right Staff Members

One of the most important things that you can do is take the time to hire the right staff members. You want to hire people who have the right skills and credentials. It’s also imperative to ensure that the staff has expectations and visions that align with your own. If everyone is able to work in harmony toward the right goals, then you’ll be much more likely to succeed.

Teach People About What You Want

It’s also going to be necessary to teach people about what you want to see. You need to make sure that your expectations for the culture of the school are set out right. Take the time to discuss things with staff members and then you can work together to make it happen. Some leaders make the mistake of not discussing expectations and this can lead to communication problems that hold the school culture back.

Express Your Vision in Tangible Ways

Expressing your vision in tangible ways can help you out, too. You know what you want your school culture to be all about and now you want to express that to students and to the world. Make sure that your vision is visible and that it is represented in your school motto, your logos, and all official school texts. Taking the time to consider how your vision is being presented to the world will make a difference.

Bring Groups Together

One problem that you might encounter is that certain groups might not feel as if they’re being included in your school. Bringing these groups together and ensuring that everyone is involved in the process makes sense. Try to restructure social networks to make them more inclusive overall. This should allow you to build better relationships with everyone while spreading your positive message about the school and its intentions moving forward.

Supporting Remote Workers as a Leader in Any Industry

Matthew Schenk business header 20

Many different industries are turning to remote workers and this has created some challenges for leaders. Some leaders might not be used to working with remote workers and this could lead to some problems with supporting those workers. You just need to approach things wisely to be able to support remote workers properly. Read the tips below that will help leaders in any industry to support remote workers to the fullest.

Stay Connected

Staying connected is truly the most important way that leaders can support remote workers. You just need to keep channels open so that you can communicate with these workers and help them out. Touch base with your remote workers each day and ensure that they know that it’s okay to reach out with questions if they need assistance. You could also take the time to create chat rooms where co-workers can discuss things while also providing other important resources that will make everyone feel constantly supported.

Develop Rituals

Developing rituals can help people to get into a routine as well. For example, you might want to have everyone check-in and send out emails first thing in the morning. Develop a routine that makes sense for your company and industry. This will give everyone a sense of what they need to do each day and it goes a long way toward keeping everyone engaged in the process.

Communicate Expectations Properly

Some leaders might have issues with communicating expectations properly. You need to make sure that remote workers know what they need to be doing and how you expect them to get things done. Take the time to talk to people about expectations and don’t just assume that everything is understood. As a leader, it falls on you to communicate with your team and to educate them on expectations if necessary.

Provide Regular Feedback

Providing regular feedback can also be an effective way of helping your remote workers succeed. Take the time to go through the data so that you can provide remote workers with the feedback that they need to improve. You can still have meetings with workers remotely and giving feedback remotely really isn’t that different from in-person job evaluations. Focus on giving succinct feedback that is helpful to workers.
